How do Desiccant Dehumidifiers Work?
Desiccant dehumidifiers work by using a large desiccant wheel to adsorb moisture from the process air stream using a chemical mixture. Most desiccant dehumidifiers utilize a rotary wheel embedded with a desiccant mixture. As the wheel spins around, moist air is blown through one side of the wheel to remove moisture from the air.
So as the process air is dried, the moisture content of the wheel rises. A second air stream is heated and passed through the wheel to remove this moisture that accumulates on the constantly moving wheel.
The heated air steam then absorbs the moisture from the wheel and dries the wheel in the process. The heated air is called “reactivation air” since it reactivates the desiccant by removing moisture from the wheel. As a result, the wheel is reactivated and can continue to dry the process air. Depending on the desiccant dehumidifier type, the reactivation air is either dried out with a condenser coil or removed from the building. This desiccant dehumidification and reactivation process continues for as long as the desiccant dehumidifier is on.
Desiccant dehumidifiers are one of two main types of dehumidifiers. The other more common type is a condensing dehumidifier, often used for pools or damp basements.
